Lançado em finais de 2004, o livro foi um dos maiores sucessos de venda da Editora Simon & Schuster em 2005. Inquestionável, tendo em conta este é o primeiro volume das crónicas escritas por Bob Dylan - o relato do início da sua carreira, chegado a Nova Iorque em Janeiro de 1961 para visitar Woody Guthrie ao hospital, e por aí ficando na Greenwich Village, vivendo a folk que por aí se ouvia, tocando em cafés como o The Commons, The Gaslight e The Limelight, convivendo com músicos, poetas, boémios nos primeiros tempos que antecederam a gravação do seu primeiro disco «Bob Dylan». Tendo sido sempre muito cioso da sua privacidade, esta autobiografia do músico é algo de verdadeiramente precioso.
Bob Dylan (nome inspirado no poeta gaulês Dylan Thomas) nasceu a 24 de Maio de 1941 no Minnesota numa família de classe média judaica. Baptisado Robert Allen Zimmerman, cresceu no frio, ao som das baladas folk de Woody Guthrie e Hank Williams. É hoje considerado o maior ícone da música popular americana. As suas canções foram a banda sonora da geração de 60 e influenciaram o estilo e conteúdo de canções de protesto um pouco por todo o mundo, apesar de ser um ponto em que Bob Dylan sempre se sentiu incompreendido. Às 24 horas de sábados, entre 13 de Novembro e finais de Janeiro, o diário de Bob Dylan em Nova Iorque é emitido na Rádio Universidade de Coimbra - um livro áudio nomeado para os Grammys na categoria Best Spoken Word Album (apesar de não ter levado a estatueta), com transcrição parcial aqui (em português tropical)... enquanto vamos esperando pelos volumes 2 e 3.
